DIY Fablab!

If you were going to build your own diy manufacturing facility for making almost anything, what would you have in it? Here's my list!

  • MakerBot - 3D printer and I'd add the heated build platform - $1000
  • Lasersaur - DIY Laser cutter kit in development - $559
  • DIYLILCNC - Sweet little CNC that uses a dremel $700 (on my personal make-list)
  • Oltrogge CNC 4×8 Router - Sweet large CNC Mill - $3000 (also on my personal make-list)
  • An awesome wet dry vacuum VERY IMPORTANT!- $200

Ok, so the total comes to $5459! Yarr! That is a super cheap and fabulous laboratory!

If I was in a hurry, I'd probably get an Epilog Zing laser instead of wait for the lasersaur, although once the lasersaur arrives on the market it's going to open up laser cutting for the masses.

I believe you can make almost anything with the above stuff. And so I throw down the challenge! What changes would you make to this list! What would you add to the DIY Fablab list? What are the cheapest options that offer the biggest opportunities for creativity? I challenge you to make your own list filled with the most powerful inexpensive tools for your own fabulous laboratory! What would you add/change?

Wouldn't you also want a "cutter" of some sort? For cutting vinyl stickers, paper boxes, and copper electrical traces? CraftRobo, USCutter or similar...

Thoughtful article, and a great way to spend $6k.

The Lasersaur price is a little deceptive. It is only for the harder to find pieces and DOES NOT include laser tube, frame/case, and stepper motors.

Bre,

I thought you might consider putting the buildlog.net laser on the list. It is smaller than the Lasersaur project, but about a third the cost. The laser is also "self-replicating" where most or the non off the shelf parts can be made by the laser.

We are currently adding a Plastruder head to the laser, so for an extra $200 you have a 3D printer too.

I would probably add a laser scanner to that so that objects could be easily replicated or a starting point for a modification can be had. Unfortunately I can't recommend one at this point, though I have seen a few apps that use webcams to do it. So far I haven't seen any opensource ones though.

Get at least a 2 hp shopvac. You can use it to do mass production of molded paper objects!!

I got to get a tutorial for that up online at some point.

Well, I was going to say you can't make CLOTHES, but then, laser cutter... it's all there. You can't make fabric, I guess. I love your stuff, but I'm a textile geek. It's great to see so much "high-tech" diy - most of the diy level of textiles is with methodology & tools ancient by comparison.
