NYCResistor 2007

In 2007 I went on a tour of European hackerspace in Germany and Austria. When we arrived at C4 (Chaos Computer Club Cologne) we were given the Hackerspace Design Patterns and based on that a few hackerspaces were born. HackDC in DC, Noisebridge in San Francisco, and I returned to NYC and gathered 9 hardware hackers and started NYCResistor. Remarkably, 20 years later it has become a non-profit and is still existing!

We set it up as a non-leader organization that welcomes folks who feel weird. We joked that instead of being alone in the dark, we would gather nerds to be together in the dark at NYCResistor.

With Astera and Jens we compiled the Hackerspaces: The Beginning book which is a great start for understanding the hacker culture of the 2000s.
