Video Blogging 2005

While teaching, I had gotten a video camera to do video art, but I was rejected by galleries so I started using the video camera to make howto videos for students. I put these online and it didn’t take long to get hired by Make: Magazine, which was the coolest thing in the world at that time. I set myself the impossible task of making a video every week, including a pdf tutorial and did all the shooting, making and editing myself. I got fast at processing video which was still in it’s primitive online era back then.

A visit to NYC allowed me to find my people there and we would go out weekly to Burp Castle for drinks and to discuss the latest video codecs and rss 2.0 feeds with enclosures.

I was the only howto video blogger for two years and just searching howto on google back then would get you pages and pages of my videos. I was a minor internet celebrity and would get recognized on the street.

You can see some of those Weekend Projects videos I made for Make: Magazine on youtube here. Later I made videos for Etsy and then had my own series called Things that you can see here.
